Will Laois bogs benefit from Bord na Móna project?

Laois needs slice of Bord na Móna funding for bog rehabilitation – Deputy Stanley

Laois-Offaly TD Brian Stanley has welcomed the announcement of €108m for Bord na Móna’s large scale peatlands restoration project. The Sinn Féin TD went on to say that it is now important that Laois receives a fair share of that allocation.

Speaking earlier, Deputy Stanley said:

“It is welcome news that Bord na Móna has secured an allocation of €108m for bog rehabilitation.

“This is a major project which I have long advocated for and the news represents a very positive development.

A clear path ahead for the bogs of Laois?

“I have argued for a long time that using bogs for carbon sequestration will help us meet out international climate change commitments and consequently will help us avoid EU fine of billions of euros.

“It is now important that we see a fair share of that allocation go to bog rehabilitation in Laois. The three Bord na Móna bogs in Laois; Cúil na Móna, Cúil na Cart and Cashel need to be utilised for this purpose.

“There are a lot of former experienced Bord na Móna workers in Laois who could avail of these jobs.

“For these reasons we need to see this funding put to work as soon as possible and make the most of this positive news for Laois and Offaly.”
