Wheels Set in Motion at launch of 62nd National Steam Rally

National Steam Rally takes place over three days, from Saturday 1st to Monday 3rd August, at Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois

The countdown is officially underway for the 62nd National Steam Rally following the event’s official launch at Stradbally Woodland Railway on Saturday.

Hosted by the Irish Steam Preservation Society, the launch brought together public representatives, performers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters as preparations continue for one of Ireland’s largest and longest-running celebrations of steam and vintage heritage.

Among those attending were Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, TD Seán Fleming, a host of country music stars, including Michael English, members of Laois County Council, sponsors, supporters and volunteers from across the region.

This year’s National Steam Rally takes place over three days, from Saturday 1st to Monday 3rd August, at Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois, with a huge programme of live country music complementing the Rally’s traditional steam and vintage attractions.

The festivities begin on Saturday 1st August with the popular Steam & Vintage Parade through Stradbally town, setting the wheels in motion for a weekend packed with entertainment, heritage and family fun.

Across the three days, visitors can enjoy a star-studded country music line-up featuring Michael English, Philomena Begley, Susan McCann, Shawn Cuddy, Declan Nerney, Louise Morrissey, The Matrimony Band, Timahoe Male Choir and many more performers, making this one of the biggest entertainment programmes ever presented at the Rally.

Alongside the music, visitors can experience everything that has made the National Steam Rally a cherished annual tradition for more than six decades, including magnificent steam engines, vintage tractors, classic cars, commercial vehicles, road-making demonstrations, blacksmithing, craft displays, steam train rides, trade stands, children’s entertainment, vintage machinery and countless other attractions celebrating Ireland’s rich industrial and rural heritage.

Speaking at the launch, Chairperson Nigel Glynn thanked everyone who attended and acknowledged the many individuals and organisations whose support makes the event possible each year.

“We are delighted to officially launch the 62nd National Steam Rally and to welcome so many supporters here today. On behalf of the Irish Steam Preservation Society, I would like to thank Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, TD Seán Fleming, Michael English, our sponsors, supporters, exhibitors and everyone who continues to support this great event.”

“A special word of thanks must go to our volunteers. Their dedication is remarkable. Not only do they work tirelessly to organise and deliver the National Steam Rally each year, but they also devote countless hours throughout the year to maintaining Stradbally Woodland Railway and operating the hugely popular Santa Train. Without their commitment, none of this would be possible.“

Mr Glynn also thanked the Rally’s sponsors, including Arigna Fuels, whose continued support helps ensure the event’s success.

The Irish Steam Preservation Society now looks forward to welcoming thousands of visitors to Stradbally over the August Bank Holiday Weekend for what promises to be another memorable celebration of steam, vintage heritage, music and community spirit.
