Weekend Weather Update

Further heavy rain is expected at times, with Friday and Sunday currently looking like the worst days. On both occasions spells of heavy rain are likely to spread from the south west leading to further heavy falls of rain. As previously stated, the river levels all across the Midlands are now reaching 2009 levels with extensive flooding on the Shannon, Barrow, and Boyne. Further sand bagging, and water pumping will be required over the coming week.

Looking further ahead it’s my inclination that we may experience a spell of potentially severe cold weather. My thinking for this is due to a sudden stratospheric warming event happening over the Arctic at present. SSW events usually precede blocking high pressure which cause the usual Atlantic flow to be disrupted and replaced by Easterly winds from a Siberian origin just as in 2009. Indeed the similarities between the weather events of 2009 and 2015/16 are becoming eerily similar.

I will continue to keep you posted as always.

If you have any further reports of flooding then please feel free to post your updates below.

Kindest regards as always,

Cathal.
