Overview
Over the course of the weekend a weakening upper level low pressure system will drip across the country from the southeast to the northwest. As the low pressure crosses the country it will provide favorable environmental conditions for the development of some locally severe thunderstorm activity. The thunderstorms will create some locally strong impacts as a result of intense precipitation, lightning and hail.
Location
The areas most favored for thunderstorms on Saturday will be through inland Munster, the south Midlands and parts of South Connacht. Ulster, East Leinster and North Connacht will escape largely unscathed. On Sunday the risk of thunderstorms becomes more widespread, with storms agin expected to develop widely across Munster, Connacht, the Midlands and West Ulster.
Precipitation
The near drought conditions may be alleviated somewhat in parts of the country over the weekend thanks to the aforementioned thunderstorm activity. Where the storms develop they will be rather slow moving and intense, leading to large falls of rain of up to 40 mm in a rather short period of time, leading to the risk of localised spot or flash flooding.
Lightning
The strong/severe nature of the storms forecast over the weekend will lead to frequent lightning within the strongest individual storm cells. This will lead to the risk of some disruption to electrical or phone services for a time, especially so during the hours of 13:00-20:00 during the peak storm activity.
Hail
Strong vertical wind shear and deep convection will also lead to the development of hail, which could be rather large locally. If you encounter hail while driving its best to find a safe place to pull over until the hailstones have cleared from the road surface as driving over hail can often lead to skidding.
