Two wins from two for Laois last weekend pushes teams towards further glory.

The Laois 2nd’s traveled to Wesley College last Saturday to take on Sandyford 1st’s in a well-fought but heated affair. On a slow, well-nourished pitch full of bumps and divots, Laois batted first and scored 166 which was a competitive score on a slow wicket. Top runs were from Omar Rasool who stabled the innings and a swift knock of 28 from Vignesh Kannan saw the Sandyford bowlers off.
In return Sandyford were in a hurry but not composed which in the end saw the downfall of the title contenders from Dublin. Kamran Sabrie was the pick of the bowlers who got 5 wickets. This win continues Laois 2’s unbeaten season in the league and are firmly on top of the division.

The highly-anticipated game of the week was when Laois 1 fought off Ballyspallen cc ( Co.Derry ) in the quarter final of the National Cup. Laois 1 continued their streak of good fortune in the cups as they beat the visitors by 70 runs. Laois won the toss and put the visitors in to bowl. Solid batting by the captain Rashid Meraj and Ramazan who put up a partnership of 121 saw the home team progress to a fair total of 266.

Sharp bowling from Amir Khan and Armand Smit keep the Derry men at bay. But soon they started to find their feet and were on par score.but Mother Nature thought differently and disrupted play.

When play resumed the Laois bowlers hit their stride again and started the destruction of the Ballyspallen batting who lost wickets in quick succession. With the captain Rashid Meraj taking the last few wickets he unsurprisingly was ‘Man of the match’.

This leaves Laois 1 in the semi-final of the National cup on August 13th later in the season and next up is a fight to retain the Senior 2 cup in the Semi-Final vs North County on the 24th of July.
