‘The Flood’ comes to Portlaoise
Carpet Theatre presents
The Flood
-A live multi-sensory audio play in the dark-
Devised by Ciarán Taylor with
performers Karl Quinn and Roger Gregg
Dunamaise Arts Centre, 24 April 8pm. €16/€14
The always inventive Carpet Theatre goes on tour this April with The Flood a fascinating audio play in the dark. The audience can wear the optional blindfolds as live music, sound effects and smells swirl around them, immersing them in a powerful experience of their other senses.
It’s the Dublin floods of 2011. David, an old sailor with failing sight, mops a leak in his kitchen all night. His family are out of reach, and the Council are too busy to help. As the rain pours and the waters rise, a lifetime of memories flows through his head. Struggling to keep mind and body together, can he weather the storm and plot his course to a new dawn?

Enjoy the incredible sensory experience The Flood
All the sound is generated live by the performers using the props of old fashioned radio drama (wind machines, gravel boxes, false doors…) and moves around the audience, putting you in the centre of the action. The performers are Roger Gregg, musician, sound designer and Crazy Dog Audio Theatre veteran, along with actor Karl Quinn, a virtuosic Carpet Theatre regular. Audience with sight loss can enjoy this play in the dark, which was developed with support from the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council /Health Service Executive Arts and Health Partnership to create performances accessible for people with disabilities.
Carpet Theatre last toured performed in Portlaoise with their hit satirical comedy The Blanch in 2011. With a more reflective mood, The Flood is embarking on a seven-venue nationwide tour funded by the Arts Council.
