On the sporting front Portlaoise AFC kicks off the new year with a home fixture against Greenhills Boys FC. This game has a 7.30pm kick off at Rossleighan.

The Laois v NUIG Walsh Cup Hurling match has been switched from Abbeyleix to Rathdowney GAA Grounds. This intriguing clash is on this Sunday.

The opening fixture of the Top Oil-sponsored Post Primary Schools Senior Hurling A Championship takes place on Saturday at 2pm with Laois Schools taking on their Meath counterparts. Laois Minor Hurling Manager Christy Walsh will see how his charges fare in what could prove to be a tight affair.  This fixture takes place in the Laois GAA Training Centre.

Over to the Big Ball code and tonight (Fri. January 6th) the county’s U-21 footballers get the Inter-County scene in Laois off to a rip-roaring start with a tasty tussle with some near and dear neighbours. . The opening round of the Peter McNulty U-21 Football Tournament sees Laois v Carlow with a 7.45 pm throw-in at the Laois Training Centre. The man in the middle is Brendan Cawley and it’s FREE in.

Errill Snooker Club’s ‘Juvenile Night’ starts back tonight (Fri. January 6th) at 7.30pm. Happy potting.

The U-18 Ladies side from the increasingly-powerful Portlaoise Panthers Basketball Club take on DCU Mercy in the Hula Hoops National Semi-Final in Cork’s Parochial Hall. That game tips off at 10am. The Panthers are organising a bus down to Cork so PM Jack Scully if travelling.
