Portlaoise Institute is delighted to offer students the opportunity to train as teachers in their new Pre-University Education and Training Level 5 further education course. 

Students will delve into various educational systems, teaching practices, and key issues in education, gaining a broad understanding of the profession. This course is aimed at students who want to pursue a career in Education, or students who are at present uncertain and want to test their compatibility to a teaching career before committing to a four-year degree programme. 

One of the distinguishing features of this course is its emphasis on developing college-readiness skills. With a focus on academic writing, referencing, study skills, collaboration, presentation skills, and effective time management, students will be well-prepared to excel in a higher education environment.

Key modules include: Concepts in Education & Training, Interpersonal & Group Behaviour, Communications, Peer Mentoring, Work Experience, Psychology, Research & Study Skills and Word Processing.

Normally students from Portlaoise would have to travel to train as teachers, now they can pursue a career in education on their doorstep”

Portlaoise Institute Launches New Full-Time SNA and Social Care course

Portlaoise Institute is excited to introduce its latest offering, a full-time one-year programme focusing on Social Studies and Special Needs Assisting. It aims to increase awareness of the practical applications of social studies while also developing the skills and role of the Special Needs Assistant.

On completion of the course, graduates may to progress to a number of 3rd level courses or to progress to employment as a Special Needs Assistant (SNA).

Modules on the course include: Special Needs Assisting, Understanding Special Needs, Teamworking, Work Experience, Family Studies, Intellectual Disability Studies, Care Skills, Understanding Mental Health and Safety and Health. These modules are tailored to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of social studies and special needs, as well as the necessary skills to excel in their future careers.
