The committee of Durrow Text Alert group are continuing to seek subscribers to the service prior to it’s launch in the near future. Most households have completed forms and paid the annual membership fee already, however a few households may have been missed when the door-to-door call was made earlier in the summer. Cullohill Tidy Towns are hosting a Fancy Dress Cabaret in O’Connell’s Lounge on Saturday night, October 31st. Prizes on the night for best costumes and with all now having three weeks to think what they might dress up as – it should be a great night! As always, all support would be greatly appreciated. Recently the Tidy Towns Group have begun work on the Community Garden in the environs of the Church. Currently the area is being mapped out and the area prepared and in time it will develop into an attractive resource in the village.
Adult Music classes will be held in Heritage House, Abbeyleix every Thursday night. Beginners welcome. Flute, whistle, guitar, banjo taught. Good craic to be had by all the participants. Durrow High Nellies Club and Laois Kayak and Canoe Club presents Pedals and Paddles on the Nore Basin on Sunday November 1st. The High Nellies route is Durrow-Moran’s Cross-Watercastle-Dunmore-Swan Cross-Durrow-Tallyhoe-Attanagh-Moate-Ballyraggett-Durrow. Laois Kayak and Canoe Club route is New Bridge-Durrow-Tallyhoe-Ballyraggett Bridge-Return to Durrow via Horse and Carriage with the High Nellies. Music and Barbeque at Bob’s Bar. Fee €10 per participant with the proceeds going to Strictly Come Dancing. Please Support.
On October 24th 1915 (one hundred years ago) Laois hurlers won the county’s only senior All Ireland Title. The team was powered by the famous Ballygeehan team of the era and captained by John Finlay. Other clubs represented were Abbeyleix, Ballacolla, Kilcotton, Rapla and Rathdowney on the day when Laois beat a highly fancied Cork side in Croke Park.

On Sunday October 18th next, Clough High Nelly Club are organising a leisurely 12km cycle through the Aghaboe parish re-enacting the players mode of transport to mark the centenary of 1915. Commencing in Clough at 1pm the route will pass The Long Meadow field where the Ballygeehan team trained. At the field the cycle will take a break for a brief talk on the story of the 1915 team before returning to Clough. Light refreshments will be served in the hall where the Bob O’Keeffe cup will be in attendance. All are welcome especially cyclists. Subscription €5

News from Our Lady’s Meadow School and around Durrow

Why not join the pupils, parents, teachers and friends and have a leisurely stroll to the beautiful woods taking in the   wonderful autumn color. If you are asked to give sponsorship, please be generous as all funds raised will go to the class library and other class needs. Light refreshments will be served after the walk.

Congratulations to Eoghan Doheny and Padraic Dunne who have become the 60×30 under fifteen Leinster Doubles Champions. They defeated Wexford in the Leinster final which now sees them in the All-Ireland Semi Final. This makes Eoghan and Padraic the first doubles pair to win a Leinster handball Juvenile Title in 60×30 for Cullohill Handball club.
