Midlands Leads Way in Climate Action at Successful ManagEnergy Expert Mission

Midlands now Sustainable Innovation and Climate Action Hub

The Midlands cemented its role as a leader in sustainable innovation and climate action during a two-day ManagEnergy Expert Mission hosted by Laois County Council. The event brought together local and international experts to advance energy efficiency, governance, and sustainable development across the region.

Held on 25 and 26 November, the mission showcased the Midlands’ efforts in tackling climate challenges through knowledge-sharing, collaborative projects, and cutting-edge solutions. Organised in partnership with the Midlands Energy Agency (MEA) and the North-West Croatia Regional Energy and Climate Agency (REGEA), it offered a platform for exploring practical steps towards Ireland’s ambitious energy and climate goals.

Showcasing Progress and Collaboration

The mission commenced with a Stakeholder Engagement Session at the Mount Lucas National Construction Centre. Attendees included members of the Midlands Energy Agency Working Group, a dedicated team of regional stakeholders who collaborate closely and meet monthly to drive progress on energy and climate initiatives.

Participants toured the NZEB and Retrofitting Training Facility, guided by John Kelly, to explore the Midlands’ leadership in sustainable construction and energy efficiency. Discussions also focused on the upcoming National MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) Demonstration Park, with Padraig Boland sharing insights on how advanced building methods are shaping the region’s future.

A highlight was the visit to the Mount Lucas Circular Bioeconomy Aquaculture Initiative (Circular IMTA), led by the Technological University of Shannon. This innovative project integrates aquaculture and circular economy principles, producing sustainable feeds and food ingredients from cultivated duckweed and macroalgae using agri-food waste streams. Professor Neil Rowan, Dr Emer O’Neill, and Pawel Wisniewski led the tour, demonstrating how the initiative is redefining sustainable food systems and waste management.

Laois County Council also showcased the progress of the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town project, highlighting transformative urban initiatives that are making Portlaoise a model for carbon reduction and sustainable living.

Digital Innovation at The Cube

Day two took place at The Cube – Low Carbon Centre of Excellence, a Midlands-based hub for advancing low-carbon solutions. Interactive sessions focused on digital tools and strategies for embedding sustainability into governance and planning processes.

A key feature was the presentation of the Zagreb Digital Twin by REGEA’s Miljenko Sedlar. This state-of-the-art tool supports energy planning and climate adaptation, demonstrating the role of digital innovation in creating resilient communities and informed decision-making.

Suzanne Dempsey, Climate Action Coordinator for Laois County Council and Energy Officer for the Midlands Energy Agency, emphasised the collaborative spirit of the mission:
“This Expert Mission demonstrates the Midlands’ strength in tackling climate challenges through partnership and innovation. By learning from transformative projects spearheaded by REGA in Zagreb and embracing cutting-edge tools like the Digital Twin, we are embedding sustainability into the heart of our region’s governance and development.”

Building a Sustainable Future

The mission concluded with discussions on skills development and advancements in Zero Energy Buildings, Passive House Standards, and modern construction methods. These initiatives are ensuring that the Midlands remains at the forefront of Ireland’s green transition and climate resilience efforts.

The ManagEnergy Expert Mission reaffirms the Midlands’ leadership in fostering innovation, driving climate adaptation, and positioning the region as a hub for sustainable development.
