Maria O’Brien Art Exhibition
On My Green Way I Wend
An exhibition of paintings by Maria O’Brien
The exhibition runs from 7th May to 3rd June, 2016 at The Laois Arthouse Gallery, Stradbally.
Official opening by Noel Kelly, CEO, Visual Artists Ireland on Saturday 7th May 2016 at 3.00pm
Maria O’Brien’s work explores landscape painting inspired by photography from social media. As overall winner of the Dunamaise Open Exhibition 2013 Maria was awarded a month-long residency in Laois Arthouse, where she is still a studio artist.
Her new body of work, created during her residency in The Laois Arthouse, reveals a renewed exploration into landscape for the artist. By working directly from photographs, found mostly on social media, the artist offers us glimpses into other people’s worlds. The artist creates small-scale paintings in oil on primed paper.
Maria O’Brien’s practice involves painting and drawing. She has a Masters in Fine Art and a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design and a Higher Diploma in Art Education from Limerick School of Art and Design. She teaches art in the Midlands Prison Education Centre in Portlaoise.
The title of the exhibition is taken from a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, ‘The Canoe Speaks’, from his collection of poems, Underwoods, 1913.
