A sneak peak behind the scenes at Electric Picnic

Electric Picnic opened its gates today for a sneak preview of the site as it awaits the arrival of the many headliners LCD Soundsystem, Lana Del Rey, The Chemical Brothers, New Order and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds this weekend and revealed some new hidden areas and festival surprises.

The Hazel Wood, a newly discovered woodland haven in the ancient Stradbally forest with a programme of mesmerising storytelling through interactive theatre, immersive hauntings, shadow puppetry, visual displays, commedia dell’arte workshops, visual art and much, much more! Today songstress Cathy Davey was the first artist to grace the bespoke wooden stage with a very special intimate performance.

The next festival encounter was Electric Picnic’s very own intergalactic invasion! An experience never seen before in this neck of the woods, Ali’s UFO with special effects will come alive at night as Gabrielle and The Soundclowns provide the dance beats, visuals and vibe that will make Picnicker’s hearts beat in time with the alien ship over the course of the weekend.

Even further into the deep Stradbally woods we happen upon the long abandoned city called Anachronica. Hidden and lurking amongst the shadows these broken and somewhat dilapidated buildings were found looming through the trees. Whatever its purpose this area of forgotten land seems to have a hypnotic effect on the people of the 21st century and will draw them in from afar to dance to this power generating machine.

Heineken Sound Atlas showcased new sounds and a music scene that’s emerging from Amsterdam to Electric Picnic. The Sound Atlas space will be the ultimate beer garden by day before transforming into one of the biggest parties on-site by night. A selection of top Dutch and local DJs will bring the sounds of Europe’s dance capital to Stradbally Hall. Sound Atlas will recreate an Amsterdam barge and run games of Barge Ball throughout the Electric Picnic weekend. Teams can battle against each other to become the ultimate Barge Ball champion. Amsterdam’s eclectic street food culture will be brought to life with a selection of Dutch delicacies on offer. The renowned Sound Atlas Photo Booth will also return with an Amsterdam makeover.

RaboDirect Tour de Picnic Sports Area celebrated the launch of its brand news area with The Slow Bicycle Race. Everyone loves a winner but today the loser was rewarded for their ability to defy gravity and cross the finishing line in the slowest possible time without falling off the bicycle.  A weekend of fun is in store on this new 20 metre course with slow bicycle races, potato sack races, egg and spoon race, wheelbarrow race and three legged race
