TRENDS will continue cold with widespread wintry showers in north, more isolated elsewhere, for less than two full days, then it will become milder and wetter after late Friday with occasional strong winds and frequent frontal passages.

FORECASTS

As a general note, watch for areas of icy or slippery roads and pavements in the next two days, it may not be widespread but could be locally hazardous, especially in the mornings.

TODAY partly cloudy to sunny and cold, wintry showers fading out by afternoon. Highs near 4 C. Frost may persist in shaded locations until early afternoon.

TONIGHT will be mostly clear with wintry showers dying out except in a few western counties. Very cold with lows -4 to +1 C.

FRIDAY will bring variable cloud and somewhat milder temperatures, followed by wind and rain overnight into Saturday morning. Lows Friday morning around -4 C, highs late Friday 7-9 C but it may stay quite cold until mid-day.

SATURDAY will be rather windy with rain tapering to showers, highs around 10 C.

SUNDAY into early MONDAY a vigorous storm system will move past Ulster into Scotland; winds will be quite strong at some point between Sunday mid-day and overnight hours into early Monday, and temperatures will peak at around 11 or 12 C. The warm front of this system could bring a brief interval of sleety mixed precipitation before milder air fully arrives with intervals of heavy rain. Expect winds at some point to reach 70-110 km/hr from southwest to west, and possibly even stronger in a few places.

MONDAY will remain windy with passing showers, temperatures in a range of 5 to 9 C (near 11 C early and for most of the day in south coast counties). Winds westerly 50-80 km/hr.

The following week will be generally mild but with temperatures on some days close to average, others well above normal (around 13 C possibly). There could be further strong winds and rainfalls. These are currently timed for Tuesday 23rd and Friday 26th.
