TRENDS … Temperatures will be colder now in a range 1 to 3 deg below normal values for about a week, with a slight moderation towards end of February. There will be occasional strong winds, and a few more mixed wintry showers, rain in the south on Sunday, and a dry interval for about two days following that; more variable and unsettled towards end of month.

FORECASTS

TODAY cold and windy at times (west to northwest 60 to 80 km/hr), squally mixed wintry showers as well as some sunny breaks, and highs 5 to 7 C. Snow if any is most likely to be seen by afternoon on higher terrain in west and north.

TONIGHT somewhat less windy, isolated wintry showers, lows -1 to +3 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud, some sunny intervals too, not as windy, cold, isolated wintry showers, lows -1 to +2 C, highs 6 to 8 C.

SUNDAY a strong low pressure system tracking from the northwest across the southwestern counties will bring a slight rise in temperatures to around 6-9 C in the south while it remains 2-5 C in the north, and some heavy outbreaks of rain are possible in west Munster (potential for 10-20 mm) , followed by strong north-northeasterly winds, as occasional rain in central counties will change to patchy sleet or wet snow on hills as the colder air in the north reaches central and southern counties later Sunday. Winds could be as strong as 60 to 80 km/hr from the north-northeast.

MONDAY will continue rather windy to mid-day, and cold with mixed wintry or sleety falls ending by mid-morning hours, partial clearing by afternoon and evening, with lows near 2 C and highs near 7 C.

TUESDAY frosty to start, some sunny intervals, lows -2 to +2 C and highs 7 to 9 C. Cloudy by afternoon with rain developing on southwest winds 40-60 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY (leap year day) are expected to be breezy to windy with temperatures in a similar range, 7 to 9 C, and passing outbreaks of rain. It may turn slightly colder again on Friday 1st of March but overall the trend will continue fairly cool into early March as a light easterly wind develops towards weekend of 2-3 March and into the following week. This spell will be just a little below average in temperature, generally dry with variable cloud and some sun, isolated showers. It will probably revert to a westerly flow by about the 7th to 9th of March.
