LIONS AFC NEWS:
New Pitch Development – Whilst Lions AFC did not get to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2021 as planned, the year most certainly ended on a high for the club. After over a decade in the making, the club have finally purchased 2.8 acres of land which adjoin their grounds. The club now has 390 players across 19 teams, and with their ever-increasing membership, and significant involvement in the Kilkenny and District League, the availability of training space and match venues have become a significant issue for the club. The purchase of this land is a huge boost to the club, as on completion of the project they will have the astro pitch, a juvenile pitch and two full size playing pitches.
Although the development is the early stages and costs have yet to be finalised, it is expected that the project will cost in the region of €300,000 and will be carried out on a phased basis. The club are hopeful that they will be in a position to secure grants from the likes of the Sports Capital Fund, LEADER and Town and Village Renewal, but a huge fundraising effort will also be required. The first fundraiser for the pitch development project is an ‘ABBAesque’ concert in the Courtyard of Lennon’s Venue, Durrow on Bank Holiday Sunday 1st May. Tickets are €20 and are available online at www.ticketstop.ie or purchase can be arranged by texting (086) 2371944. This new pitch development will be of huge benefit to all the players and to the wider community so all support would be appreciated.
