Report from Laois Intermediate & Juvenile Cross Country Championship

The Laois Intermediate and Juvenile Cross Country Championships took place in Abbeyleix on Sunday Oct 8th.

In glorious sunshine, in Ireland’s Tidiest Town, the Vicarstown-based Oughaval AC literally “cleaned up” by winning both the Intermediate Mens and Intermediate Womens Team Titles.

Following on from their great performances two weeks ago, with the Mens Team winning the Novice Title, and their Womens Team winning the silver medals, it has been a great season so far for this small club down by the Grand Canal.

The Vicarstown parkrun and junior parkrun is paying dividends, with 2k and 5k runs taking place every weekend.

The Women’s team of Deirdre Miller, Frances Lalor, Catherine Stapleton and Edel Carty had to work hard over the hilly 4,000m course. Only a few points separated themselves and St. Michaels at the end.

The Men’s team of Daniel McLoughlin, Kristian Redmond, Oisin Jago, Paddy McLoughlin and Brian Hogan had a great battle all through with the St Abbans lads.

As the 5 laps progressed, the Oughaval lads had some places to make up, and slowly but surely they reeled them all in.

It was all down to a sprint finish between Paddy and Dave Murphy of St Michaels, to win the title.

Paddy outsprinted Dave by the smallest of margins to gain those valuable 2 points. They were superbly backed up by good runs from John Boland and Barra O’Nuallain also.

In the juvenile races there were numerous great Oughaval performances too.
