CULTURE NIGHT 

Culture night takes place on September 22 in Portarlington.
Print Making with Artist Mary Slevin at her studio at Mount Henry, Killenard. R322XH93. Adults-11am to 12.30pm. Children-4pm to 5pm.

Join Port Art Collective for an art crawl for all-ages. The Port Art Crawl will start at 6.30pm sharp in Portarlington Library, with crafts demonstrations from the Brat Bhrídes and Made with Knots. Presentation by local illustrator David Butler on the illustrated life of Michael Collins, at 7pm at Portarlington Museum, Catholic Club, Main Street. A talk by local historian David Orford will bring some of the artefacts in this fascinating collection to life.7:30 Iwona’s Studio (over Lyles Shoes) Main Street.

An exhibition of recent work from artists Iwona K Tiernan, Catherine Terrett and Leonie Connellan to an eclectic backdrop of instrumental music from Kim Melia. From 8.30pm at the Parochial Hall, Market Square. We will have music from the Port Concert Band, Ukrainian Choir and Georgian Folk Group to bring the swing and the hall will be lined with paintings and sculpture from local artists. Award winning Laois poet Pat Boran will read from his work.

The French Quarter will deliver the cool from 8:30 with DJ Filip Kral dropping ambient beats alongside an exhibition of prints by local photographer Frank Smith, and some great food and drink. Port Sounds takes place at The Anvil Inn from 9pm with local performers Dopamine, Rocz, Thank’s Mom, That’s Alright, Insomniacs and more…The night will be compèred by Adam Cullen who’s will also perform spoken word pieces between acts.

HISTORY OF WALSH ISLAND

Hundreds of Walsh Island people from near & far recently packed in to the hub at Mountlucas wind farm for the launch of a “History of Walsh Island through its people”. Master of ceremonies on the day was Aidan Mahon. The book was inspired by the late Mikey Fox & was a labour of love by the Historical Society, who spent the last number of years researching & compiling the publication. One of the highlights of the book are the memories & life stories of ordinary members of the community, including Maureen Comerford, Tommy Mooney, Bridget & Tim O’Rourke, Willie Fingleton, Liam McGrath & many more. The book is available in shops in Daingean, Rhode, Portarlington, Geashill & Tullamore. Also from offalyhistory.com. The proceeds of the book will go to headstones on unmarked graves in the new Cemetery in Walsh Island.

He will be sadly missed by his partner Mary, sons Danny, Aidan & Patrick, daughter Siobhan, mother Ita, grandson Noah, brothers Jim, Joe & Dec, sisters Phil & Martha, extended family & friends. Funeral took place on Tuesday September 5. May Darby rest in Peace.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Patrick, sons Patrick, Stephen & Kevin, daughters Tanya & Emma, her beloved grandchildren Katelyn, Danielle, Christopher, Tyler, Kaiden & Mason, brothers, sisters, extended family & friends. 

Funeral Mass took place on Sunday September 3 at St Michael’s Church Portarlington, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Jess gentle soul rest in Peace.

Deepest Sympathy to the family of John Keogh, Florida & formerly Patrick St Portarlington who passed away on Monday September 4. 

John was the 3rd eldest of 7 children of Garrett & Dora Keogh. His journey through life was marked by adventure, dedication, and an enduring sense of humor. During his time in secondary school at the Christian brothers in Portarlington, he excelled in football, playing for both the Christian Brothers and the County Offaly Minor team. John is survived by his loving wife Marie, his children, Gearóid and Gráinne, his brothers Paddy and Brian, and his three sisters, Peg Whealan, Anne Byrne, and Doreen Folan. He will be dearly missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and friends. John is preceded in death by his brother, Gary. A further notice to be announced of a Funeral Mass for John, to be held at St. Michaels Church in Portarlington.  May John rest in Peace.
