PRIDE OF PORT

On Wednesday September 8 last, the town & surrounding areas of Portarlington celebrated the homecoming of the wonderful Nicole Turner, who won a Silver medal in the 50m butterfly swim in Tokyo at the Paralympic Games. Huge crowds turned out on the streets to cheer Nicole on as she travelled from Portarlington Rugby club through the town and out to her home in Garryhinch. Nicole is the pride of her family & her town. Congratulations to Nicole on her success & we wish her the very best in her future career. 

WALK IN CENTRE

The Covid-19 walk-in vaccination centre that had been operating from the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise since Wednesday April 21 has relocated. It is now located on Saint Fintan’s Hospital Campus, off the Stradbally Road in Portlaoise. The clinic will cater for those availing of their first and second Pfizer doses. Please note, in order to receive the second dose of Pfizer you must wait at least 21 days after your first dose. There is free parking on the grounds of the campus.

MEALS ON WHEELS 

Portarlington Social Services will celebrate 50 years serving the public next year. Started in September 1972 by a group of community spirited local people.  Last year up to 10,000   meals were prepared and delivered. To continue with this wonderful service, we are always looking for new blood on the Committee. If you are interested, please e-mail annmdun@hotmail.com or phone the Centre at 0578623461.

The Portarlington Social Services, Seniors Bingo will return on Wednesday September 22nd at 8.30pm in the Social Services Centre Link Road. Come along to a lovely Social night. Play a few games of Bingo & enjoy a cuppa. All precautions are in place for your safe return. We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

SYMPATHY

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Mary (Maisie) Curtayne (nee McEvoy, late of St Mary’s Tce, Portarlington who passed away at Oakdale Nursing Home on Saturday September 4. Maisie will be sadly missed by her loving daughter Pauline, sons Liam & Stephen, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters Kathleen, Nano & Theresa, brothers Thomas & Sonny, extended family & friends, especially her close friend Liz Waldron. Funeral Mass took place on Monday September 6 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Maisie rest in Peace.

The Port GAA Bingo is back. The Club look forward to welcoming their patrons back at 8.30pm this Tuesday September 14 for the resumption of their weekly bingo. Patrons are asked to arrive early, face masks and covid certificate are required for entry.

ENHANCEMENT SCHEME

Laois County Council have extended the Portarlington Facade Enhancement Scheme.

Application deadline has been extended to September 30.

In accordance with the “Portarlington Regeneration Strategy 2030” Laois County Council is seeking to improve the streetscape and public realm of Portarlington Town. The Business Support Unit are now accepting applications for the Portarlington Façade Enhancement Scheme in the following areas – Main Street, Market Square and French Church Street. The scheme is available to both commercial and residential premises and interested businesses/residents can apply by downloading the application form from Laois County Council’s website or by contacting Sheila Cahill at 057 8664015 or email: scahill@laoiscoco.ie.
