AGM

The 51st AGM of the Portarlington Social Services/Meals on Wheels took place on Monday May 9. Chairperson Paul Mooney welcomed everyone to the AGM. He thanked everyone who has made it possible to keep this wonderful Service running. 

The following were elected to the committee. With Paul stepping down as Chair, Rory Whelan was elected as this year’s Chairperson. Assistant chairperson-Marguerite Kirwan. 

Secretary-Ann Bourke Dunne. Assistant secretary-Sinead Dunne. Treasurer-Brendan Broderick. Assistant treasurer-Geraldine O’Reilly. 

Committee-Ken & Breda Dunne, Paul Mooney, Jenny Champ, Jen Barber, Mary Pierce, Ciaran Dunne & Patsy Whelan. Trustees-Dr Adrian Honan, Geraldine O’Reilly, Ken Dunne & Jenny Champ-Hendy.

The Tidy Town's 'Spring Clean' of Portarlington on Saturday 23 April was a big success. Over 120 volunteers took part at 34 different locations across the town and surrounding areas. 190 sacks of rubbish were collected.

 WOMENS SHED

Last week a group of ladies came together to start the very 1st Women’s Shed in Portarlington. The group will continue to meet every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Further Education Centre, Bracklone St. If you are interested come along and join, what will be a very enjoyable meeting with lots of activities to enjoy. 

PORT TEXT ALERT

Garda Síochána Laois/Offaly are happy to welcome the great work from the Love Portarlington office to get the Portarlington Text Alert back up and running. Text Alert is a means for an Garda Síochána to get information out to communities. If you want to sign up contact them at 0578608395. No personal information is provided to an Garda Síochána.

We at Love Portarlington are working very hard in the background to get the Portarlington Text Alert back up and running. We are looking to see what Estates have Residents Committee. If possible, could they ring the office on 0578608395 as we plan to relaunch the service in August or possibly early September.

SYMPATHY

Deepest Sympathy to Beatrice & Johnny Wallace & family on the death on May 9 of Beatrice sister Eileen Murphy (nee McDermott) Dunderrow, Co. Cork. Eileen will be sadly missed by her loving husband Noel, son Brian & daughter Anita, sisters Maureen, Beatrice, Anna & Kathleen, brothers Tony & Owenie, extended family, neighbours & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Wednesday May 11 at St John’s Church Kinsale, with burial after in Dunderrow Cemetery. May Eileen’s gentle soul rest in Peace.

Get this event in the diaries – a brand new 1-day music festival in Portarlington with 8 amazing local bands, takes place on May 21 in the Anvil Inn Portarlington supporting Irish music. With the support of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and Laois County Council.

FIRST RESPONDERS

Portarlington community responder group were stood down due to the escalating and ongoing Covid 19 situation. This also included the Portarlington First Responders. But the great news is that the National Ambulance Service have given them the thumbs up to start back up again. Well done to the Health & Wellbeing committee at the Portarlington GAA Club for organising the 1st Darkness in to Light in Portarlington last week. A big well done to all who walked and supported the collection for Pieta House. Well done Port.
