Latest Laois Event: Portlaoise Library celebrates Europe Day

Europe Day celebrated at Portlaoise Library & Europe Direct Centre

Portlaoise Library and Europe Direct Centre celebrated Ireland’s 50 years of EU membership on Europe Day, Tuesday the 9th of May. The library welcomed Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Sean Fleming, to view the Europe Direct centre and the different information it provides to the public. Into Europe: Ireland and the EU, a digital exhibition by the Department of Foreign Affairs which focused on various aspects of Ireland’s relationship with the European Union over the last 50 years, was also displayed throughout the day at Portlaoise Library.

Portlaoise Library is one of eight Europe Direct centres in Ireland, and joins a community of 424 Europe Direct centres around Europe, whose purpose is to strengthen the connection between EU institutions and citizens. Europe Direct Portlaoise acts as a contact point for information on the European Union, where the local community can access publications and brochures from EU institutions, and participate in events, including talks, exhibitions, school visits and competitions.
