Latest Laois Event: Mountrath Community School’s Junk Kuture Pandemic-inspired entry into Grand Final

Mountrath Community School’s imaginative Junk Kuture entry reaches Grand Final

“We are going to Wicklow to film for the Grand Final tomorrow (October 1st) which will be aired later in the year. The filming will take place in Ballybeg House.

What inspired us and materials used:

Our  design ‘Alarming Twists’ was inspired by the pandemic and what an alarming twist that was in all our lives.

The trousers are Psychedelic Flare pants inspired by fashion icons from this era, crocheted from old alarm cables found in our sheds.

Our top is a corset style garment adorned with miniature daisies and was crocheted using clear plastic vegetable bags that We cleaned, cut and twisted into yarn.

A multicoloured ombre cape was Inspired by a blooming flower meadow and was created by crocheting over 300 individual flowers from the alarm wire and tying them together with copper wire.

Our headpiece incorporates more flowers in a crown of coloured spikes. We melted strips of plastic into individual spikes and twists over a candle. We attached them to a base of bottle bottoms to give our headpiece a tiered effect.

Our shoes are embellished with plaited copper wire and match our dainty copper flower necklace.

Our colourful hippie aesthetic truly embodies our vision of positivity, love, and respect for the environment.”
