Latest Laois Event: Festival of Flight takes off in Portlaoise

Festival of Flight 2022 – celebrating history of aviation and exploration in Laois

The Colonel James Fitzmaurice Commemorative Society is delighted to announce that we are involved in hosting the Festival of Flight 2022 – celebrating the rich history of aviation and exploration in Laois with music events, arts and science workshops, history talks and films. The events take place over the 94th anniversary of the first transatlantic East West flight.

Latest Laois Event: Festival of Flight takes off in Portlaoise

Festival of Flight Highlights include:

Saturday 9th April at 3pm, St Peter’s Church of Ireland Portlaoise

Performance of the Impossible Dream by Martin Tourish and the Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra, with performance by poet Laura Murphy and short talks on the history of aviation in Laois. Bookings now open for this event at https://dunamaise.ticketsolve.com/shows/873624914

Sunday 10th April at Noon, Fitzmaurice Place

Wreath laying to commemorate the 94th Anniversary of the first East West Transatlantic Flight, with display of the Portlaoise Plane and flyover by historic aircraft. 

Thursday 7th and Friday 8th April

Schools’ arts and science workshops on the theme of flight. Schools’ aviation careers talks.

The Festival of Flight is organised by the Col James Fitzmaurice Commemoration Committee, in partnership with Laois County Council, Laois Heritage Society, Music Generation Laois, the Dunamaise Arts Centre and Midlands Science. The event is funded by Creative Ireland Laois as part of the Creative Ireland Programme 2017-2022 in partnership with Laois County Council and the Heritage Council.
