Carmel O’Leary as Toastmaster for the evening chaired a very full meeting with guests from Lucan, Maynooth, Dublin, Kildare and Portlaoise. The visitors included Luanne Kent responsible for the Irish & UK Toastmasters who came to present Mark Bastow with an award recognising his work as Area Governor helping clubs in Kilkenny, Carlow and Laois achieve excellence.
Owen Sweeney gave a very comprehensive in-depth insight into the Mormons or Latter Day Saints. As usual Owen’s presentation was well researched, well-crafted and well given. Anthony Casey a welcome visitor from Kildare gave a very timely update on how to spend a penny. With water charges likely to eventually settle at about €450 per year Anthony’s answer was to half our water consumption with the waterless loo. He even brought in a stainless steel model which excited great interest.
In the second half a wide selection of table topics given by Mark Bastow was enjoyed by all. The evening then concluded with awards given to Portarlington’s own Owen Sweeney for the best speech, Joseph Brady from Maynooth for the best table topic speech, and to Mary White from Portlaoise for the best evaluation of the evening.
The next meeting on May 19 at 7.45pm in the upstairs meeting room of the Anvil Inn in Portarlington. Always an opportunity for anyone interested in joining a friendly supportive club to come along. Look on Facebook, MeetUp or on www.portarlington.toastmastersclubs.org/
