Laois Youth Theatre News
Laois Youth Theatre know how to put on a show! The young members (12-14yrs) kicked off the evening’s entertainment with an exhilarating devised piece of physical theatre that left the audience breathless. This highly focused troupe of performers gave us WHIPLASH, a short, sharp series of fabulous movement sequences delivered by pairs on chairs with skill, energy and at breakneck speed!
The older members (15-18yrs) presented Mobile Phone Show by Jim Cartwright in the Youth Education Centre, Portlaoise on the 22nd May. This large cast of talented performers, 22 in all, created highly entertaining and hugely energetic scenes inspired by our relationship with the mobile phone. In the opening announcement, the audience for once were asked to keep their phones ON throughout the performance. The tinkling metallic soundtrack was provided by the ever-present mobile phone as the cast took us through the highs and lows that this little device engenders. Passions ranged from reverential worship, a supernatural encounter, a nerdy text-off, romance, haikus, a bit of rapping, youths on the rampage and the ultimate suffering that is induced when a phone goes missing! The texting “shoot out” scene and the angst ridden lost phone scene were particularly memorable and helped to make this a positively lively production.
Laois Youth Theatre will be recruiting new members in September 2015 – further details available from the Arts Office, Laois County Council.
