Laois Youth Theatre Performances in Portlaoise on Fri 22nd May at 8pm

This year, Laois Youth Theatre’s talented group of 15-18year olds will tackle Jim Cartwright’s play, “The Mobile Phone Show”.  An exciting celebration of youth theatre, it’s author describes it as “a communication cacophony, a fully charged up chorus line of chaos in a rhapsody of rap, text, tweet and gabble”.  The play was commissioned in 2013 for and about young people by the UK’s National Theatre and is a unique theatrical experience where only two things count – your phone is on and you have a signal!  Funny, moving and at times poignant “The Mobile Show” looks at the importance of the phone in the 21st century and how we use it to stay connected, explore the world and store our lives, and how dependent we have become on them – texting, talking , playing games, checking emails and updating our social media presence. It asks what effect this instant communication has on our social values, on our community and on how we form connections with others.  Laois Youth Theatre’s performers create a highly entertaining and intriguing flow of varied scenes where bodies will fall, fly and collide with movements inspired by our relationship with the mobile phone.

Siobhán Coffey, Youth Theatre Director of 11 years, commented, “youth theatre and it’s young people have huge energy, fuelled by infinite possibilities.  The young people build both their drama and personal skills in the weekly workshops, with life-long bonds being made and new ways of expressing yourself constantly being discovered.  Youth Theatre fosters playfulness, and at best, inspires participants (and me) to make magic!”

Laois Youth Theatre groups are run by The Arts Office in Laois County Council and take place in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Saturdays – from 10-11.30am for ages 12-14 and a second workshop for ages 15-18 running from 12-1.30pm.
