Laois Handball at Leinster Wall-Ball Championships

Laois Handball Success at Leinster Wall-Ball Championships
Laois played host to this year’s Leinster Wall-Ball Championships and once again our players performed admirably taking two Leinster titles in the process.
In the Men’s C competition, Laois players Pauric Buggy and Kevin Brennan showed great form to top their respective groups. Pauric easily defeated Conor Smith of Offaly 24-11 in his opening game before recording an equally impressive 31-8 victory over Kevin Rossiter of Carlow. Kevin displayed great resilience and skill to win his three group games. He overcame Aaron Boylan of Westmeath 21-14, Kevin McCarthy also of Westmeath 21-14 and Kevin Kilmurray of Offaly 19-15.

In the semi-final, Pauric faced an inform Jonathan Westlake of Dublin in what proved to be the game of the day. Nothing separated the two players throughout and inevitably the game was to finish level at 22 aces apiece setting up a sudden death playoff. Pauric’s superior fitness was to prove telling at this juncture and he defeated his gallant opponent 5-1 to book his place in the final. In the other semi-final, Kevin maintained his excellent form from the group stages to record a hugely impressive 22-12 victory over Darren Carter of Westmeath.

The all-Laois Men’s C final never reached the heights of the semi-finals. The exertions of earlier rounds seemed to take their toll on Kevin and he failed to replicate his best form against his younger opponent. Pauric continued to play with a huge intensity and he ran out a worthy winner and Leinster Men’s C champion on a 22-8 scoreline.
In the Golden Masters, All-Ireland 40×20 champion Paddy Donovan was at his imperious best to add another title to his growing list in 2015. In his opening game he impressively defeated Eamonn Purcell of Kilkenny 21-3 before powering past Ollie Maguire of Louth 21-13 to book his place in the final where he faced Martin Lalor of Kilkenny. Paddy was to dominate from the off gaining a lead he would never relinquish and captured the Golden Masters Leinster title on a scoreline of 21-4.
In the Men’s B competition there was no joy for Andrew Dowling. After two fantastic victories over Martin Mullins of Carlow and Billy Caddell of Louth he narrowly lost out to Daniel Kavanagh of Wicklow to exit what proved to be a highly competitive grade on the day.
