Laois athletes shine at All-Ireland Champs

Runners from Laois clubs excelled at All-Ireland cross-country

The three McLoughlin sisters of Oughaval AC led the Laois contingent, on what was a very successful day for our county’s athletes.

Hosted by Dundalk St Gerards, in the grounds of the DKIT, the recent rains made for muddy conditions, as the photos will show.

The U13 girls team of Amelia Milligan, Eabha McCoubrey, Leah Dunphy, Ellie Knowles, Grainne Emerson and Mollie Kelly ran their hearts out, and finished just outside the team medals.

The Girls U15 race had great Laois interest, with Eliza McLoughlin of Oughaval AC in the leading group all through, eventually finishing in second place. She was well supported by Aine O’Loughlin of St Michaels AC and Cara Dooley of Ballyfin AC.

The U15 Boys team fullfilled their promise by winning the Silver County Medals. Led home by magnificent race winner David Warjak of Portlaoise, Riley Connolly St Michaels in third, Kalem Buggy St Abbans in 10th, and well supported by Dylan Yarrow, Gearoid McCann and Jack Bennett (all St Michaels).

The U17 Boys had Sean McAuliffe St Michaels finish in a fine third place, with Will Ryan of Ballyroan in 5th and Shane Maher St Michaels in 6th also on the podium.

The Girls U17 brought even more excitement as Della McLoughlin of Oughaval AC surged through the field in the second half of the race, to take the lead as she turned into the finishing straight. Her sister Katie was only a few places behind in 6th, with Siobhan O’Loughlin St Michaels also making the medals podium in 9th place.
