Is Laois man and top FBI fugitive ‘Runaway Joe’ still alive?

Do you know Joseph Michael Maloney (Joe / ‘Runaway Joe’ AKA Michael O’Shea)?

Joseph Maloney Sr. (1901-1966) came from Barna, a townland in Roscrea. His mother was Winifred C. Doyle (1908-1962) from Ballaghmore, Laois. Winifred’s father and mother, James Doyle and Mary Quinlan, are buried nearby. Winifred and Joseph Sr. emigrated to Rochester in upstate New York where their son Joseph Michael Maloney (Joe / ‘Runaway Joe’) was born in 1935. In 1975, Joseph Michael Maloney (Joe /’Runaway Joe’ now calling himself Michael O’Shea) O’Shea purchased Capard House for £42,000 Irish pounds from Robert Noonan, a property developer. He tried to set up a potato farming business on the land, but that was a failure. He also tried pony trekking on the land. Erika Lotze, a German woman, was the housekeeper at Capard while O’Shea was there. In the early 1980s, he bought a house in Castletown. Erika Lotze, a German woman, was the housekeeper at Capard while O’Shea was there.

Joe Maloney / Michael O’Shea when he was in his late teens / early 20s and would have been visiting the local area.

The RTE researchers would be keen to hear from anyone who knew Michael O’Shea who owned Capard House in Rosenallis, Co Laois, from 1975 until his arrest in 1985. O’Shea was in fact Joseph Michael Maloney (Joe / ‘Runaway Joe’) – an American on the run from the FBI on a charge of murdering his wife in 1967. They’d also be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers Erika Lotze.

The RTE researchers are also be interested to hear from people who knew Joe Maloney’s family in the local area – especially his aunts Mrs J. Viney, Mrs W, Austin,  Mrs Bryan and Mrs Delaney.
