
Irish Quilters showcase at Gallery in Mountmellick Library
The Gallery in Mountmellick Library is delighted to host the following exhibition for the month of September-the North South East West by the Irish Quilters showcase and the Limerick Prison exhibition. The exhibition will be launched on Tuesday 5th September at 7.00pm and all are welcome to attend. If unable to attend the launch, the exhibition will be available to view during Mountmellick library opening hours until the 28th September.
This annual exhibition is the Third Irish Quilters’ Showcase which launches National Quilting Week Ireland. It features 13 quilts by invited Textile Artists living in Ireland which include: Ruth Bourke, Ethelda Ellis, Nikki Foley, Ester Kiely, Claire Lynch, Irene MacWilliam, Sarah Madden Noonan, Margaret McCrory,Tomomi McElwee, Mary Palmer, Paula Rafferty, Maya Toscani,4WTG- Catherine Duggan, Joanna Harrington, Mary Hughes, Anne Maloneyand Evelyn Montague. The exhibition was curated by Paula Rafferty, the original idea for this exhibition was conceived by Nikki Foley.

In addition there willbe on display a collection of Limerick Prison Quilts. These quilts are created by students in the Education Centre, Limerick Prison. The Irish Prison Service and the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board work together to provide a wide range of classes for students. These quilts were produced in the Art and Craft class, which is taught by Paula Rafferty. Limerick is the only prison in Ireland to produce such unique textiles. Many students make quilts to be donated to Heart Children Ireland and other local charities.
