Graiguecullen ‘Blast from the Past’ 

According to the 1901 Census Chaff Street, Graiguecullen, had 84 people

Of fourteen houses, thirteen had a piggery and five had hen houses. The professions were 1 Blacksmith, 1 Bank Agent, 2 Corn Merchants, 14 General Labourers,1 Coachman, 1 Cycles Worker, 1 Apprentice, 3 dressmakers, 1 clerk, 2 stable boys, 4 tailors, 1 shoemaker, 1 clerk, 3 saddlers, 13 housewives, 1 miller, 2 people of no occupation, 25 scholars, 6 infants. The average age was 24 and the oldest general labourer was 76. Family names: Brennan, Crampton, Curran, Doyle, Fenlon, FitzPatrick, Foley, Geoghan, Ireton, James, Johnston, Murphy, Pender, Reeves, Scully Ireton.

Last week  in the U-10 indoor soccer the girls played Rathvilly in the first match. With two goals from Emma Doyle and some fine saves from Heidi Jones winning the game for Graiguecullen then in the semi final they had to play the favourites Borris and even with rentlentless work from Caoimhe Brennan and Abbey O’ Shea they still lost to the eventual winners Borris.

The boys played Askea in the first round and with goals from Dylan murphy and Aiden bradley seeing them through they then played Slaney Valley in the semi final. This time it was goals from Lorcan Demspey and Dylan Murphy got them into the final against Ballon.

The final started off at a hectic pace with Dylan Murphy and Aiden Bradley giving Graiguecullen the lead at half time. The second half started and soon Oisin Daly had chipped in a lovely goal just before Oran O’ Reilly had tapped home a penalty. With Lorcan Demspey, Harry Gordan and goalie Ben Cullen in total control at the back Graiguecullen were crowned champs of 2016.

Well done to our Under-13 girls basketball team yesterday. They had a great match but unfortunately lost out to Askea. Boys U-13 basketball this morning lost 9 to 7 against Slaney Valley/ Next week U-13 futsal boys and girls.
