The Laois Heritage Society presents a talk by Colonel Donal O’Carroll on the Battle of Kilrush, which was a military engagement in Co. Kildare about six miles north of Athy in 1642. There was some Laois involvement with the brothers Rory and Lewis O’More taking a prominent par. The battle took place only a matter of months after the outbreak of the rising of 1642 and thus such aspects as the raising of the forces, their organisation, weapons and equipment, and above all leadership, are of particular interest. An intriguing feature of the period is the number of factions prevalent at the time: Gaelic, Old English (i.e. Anglo-Irish), New English, Northern Scots and Northern English. Above all, one must address the question ‘Why did the rising occur? The venue is the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise at 8pm On Thursday, November 16th 2017. Non members €5.
