‘Laois Heritage Society Presents’ series of lectures commences on Thursday, Feb.16th in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. The first talk, The Land Wars of the 1830s in the Slieve Margy area of Laois by Terry Dunne (PhD Maynooth) at 8pm.
Terry will give an interesting insight into the class conflict in mining and farming in Slievemargy and surrounding districts in the 1820’s and 1830’s. This area was one of the main centres of the Whitefeet movement: one of a series of similar peasant movements active from the 1760s to the 1850s. The Whitefeet originated as a fighting faction, before evictions led to a violent response. All are welcome to attend what promises to be an most interesting presentation. If you have an interest in history, why not become a member of the Laois Heritage Society?
Terry is originally from Kilkea, south Kildare and completed his Ph.D at the sociology department of Maynooth University in 2015. He is currently working on publishing his research.
