Erkina Blueway Gets Green Light

Green light for Erkina Blueway

Laois county council have granted planning permission to The Woodenbridge Paddlers Association  for the development of of a Blueway along the River Erkina  through the townlands of Castle Dorrow Demesne, Knocknanoran, Ballygague Beg, Derreen and Carrowreagh, Ballygarvan Glebe, Ballyboodin, Kyletilloge, Bracas, Oldglass and Kilnaseer.

The development will consist of the removal of obstructions so as to allow small crafts navigate the river. The constitution of a floating pontoon at Castle Durrow Demesne, a foot bridge on the River Goul at its confluence with the River Erkina, carpark at the Woodenbridge, access steps and carpark at Boston Bridge, information boards, signage, ring-buoys, seating etc.

Fun along the beautiful Erkina

The River trail will be complement by an on road cycle loop which will link to the existing South Laois cycle trails and have a start point at the CircleK/Supermac’s complex at Manor Stone. From Castle Durrow the Blueway Trail will also be accompanied by part of the Leafy Loop walk.

Work on the Erkina Blueway which will be a huge boost to Tourism in South Laois should commence by late 2020.
