Election ‘dirty tricks’ campaign in Portlaoise

The Local Elections are getting closer and closer with every passing day and, consequently, the stakes are increasing for all the candidates in the race. However it seems that for some there is clearly a mantra of ‘win at all costs’ at play as the sinister events of last weekend in Portlaoise indicate.

Has the concept of a fair and free election gone up in smoke in Portlaoise?

The rules, and indeed spirit, of Parliamentary Democracy were literally torched in our county town over the weekend. Election posters belonging to Councillor Mary Sweeney were either taken down or burnt down where they stood on poles throughout the town.

When contacted by the Laois People today (05/05/14) a disheartened Councillor Sweeney took up the story : “The majority were taken down in Portlaoise around (the) town centre and 3 burnt down on (the) Meelick Road, one at a private house. Also (I) noticed some missing from Ballyroan this morning. Very disheartening.” The Ballyroan-based Councillor went further and said it was a frightening development.

Indeed it is and those culprits involved should be identified and prosecuted.  A democracy of over 90 years’ standing should have left such ‘dirty tricks’ behind long, long ago.
