CLONEYGOWAN GOOSEBERRY FAIR

Re-scheduled for Sunday Sept 13. This promises to be a wonderful event, with only 2 years to go to celebrate 200 years of this event in Cloneygowan village. Proceeds will aid running of the Old Folks Party & trip to Lourdes. Your support will be appreciated very much.

Trilogy Triathlon Club in Laois are holding a Sprint Triathlon with a shorter swim option and a relay option on Saturday morning September 19 from Portarlington leisure Centre. World War 1 Directory

Portarlington Arts & Heritage Group have produced a directory listing the one hundred men from Portarlington who were killed in the Great War. The directory, which is a limited edition of 100 copies, will be officially launched on Saturday August 29 at 8.00pm in the Old Convent, Patrick Street, Portarlington. The launch will be followed by a concert of World War 1 songs and music. Tickets for the concert are available from Central Stores, Main Street, Portarlington, or Portarlington Parish Office, or at the door on the night, priced €10 each.

Saluting the Brave
Mountmellick group Emer Dunne and Drua will be performing their popular show ‘Saluting the Brave’ again this year, this time in Portarlington as part of Heritage Week 2015. The show, which features songs and music of the Great War, was very successful and attracted a large audience when they performed it in Mountmellick last year. The show takes place on Saturday August 29 at 8.00pm in the Old Convent assembly Hall, Patrick Street, Portarlington, (beside the RC Church) Admission is €10. The highlight of the programme will be The Promise of Barty O’Brien (1951) , a rarely-seen featurette, specially restored for this presentation. It is a compelling family drama about a young man who dreams of becoming an engineer at the Portarlington Power Station. Wednesday 26 August, 8pm, €7/€5.

Getting the Butterflies to fly in Formation
Portarlington Speakers are giving a comprehensive course in oral communication designed to give quick help to the inexperienced speaker and to assist the person with some training to become a more polished speaker. The course will be given by experienced Toastmasters and will appeal to a very wide audience including people wishing to further their careers, return to work and third level students wanting to prepare for their first college presentations. The course costs only €40 including tuition and all materials. Portarlington Speakers are taking bookings for the course running over six consecutive Tuesdays from September 8 to October 13 at 8pm to 9.30pm here in Portarlington at the Anvil Inn.
