More FREE EVENTS in Laois to celebrate Culture Night on Friday 18th September 

 

In Mountrath at 6.30pm the Quakers of Mountrath will be remembered with a plaque unveiled at the former Quaker Burial Ground in the town. The unveiling will be followed by a talk at Mountrath Library by Christopher Moriarty of the Quaker Archive, on “Quakers in Laois”. Light refreshments will be served after the talk. All are welcome. This is a co-operative project of the Quaker Archive, Laois Heritage Office and Mountrath Development Association. We are grateful to The Ethel Adair Impey Charitable Trust for their support of this event. O’Dempseys GAA Club, Ballybrittas at 6pm we have Cheoil Na Díomsaigh.  The event will include a demonstration of Irish Music and song by club members both young and old. All welcome! For more info contact: 0872957938

 Portlaoise Comhaltas will give a performance at Portlaoise Library  from 5pm-6pm– all welcome.

 Our main highlight events is a concert with acclaimed Irish Singer, Songwriter John Spillane,  at the Arts Centre, Mountmellick at 7pm. The concert is the finale of a project titled “Songwriting in Laois” that will have John visit a number of schools in the county to encourage them to explore songwriting, with a focus on songs in Irish.  The performance will feature some of these students, and the work that they have created together.  Concert Booking: T: 057 8663355 or www.dunamaise.ie  tickets also available on the door on the night.

 Another highlight for families in Portlaoise at the Dunamaise Arts Centre is a Family Book Reading and Art Workshop called The Adventures of Flopsy Hop the Rabbit in Origami Wonderland”  starting at 6pm.  Offaly based designer, craft maker and ‘Maker of Magic’ George Dempsey Flanagan of Mojo Creations presents a very special fun filled event of Origami Magic! Book reading for all ages | Workshop for ages 5+ and their grownups!    Maker of Magic will also visit local schools as part of the event.  Booking: 057 866 3355 or www.dunamaise.ie

Also near Portlaoise, for all budding artists we have a fantastic opportunity to paint/draw outdoor on the Rock of Dunamase with one of our leading landscape artist Jock Nichol, from 3.30-5pm.  Places are limited and booking is essential T: 057 8664033/13

Heritage House, Abbeyleix will hold a traditional Irish crafts evening with demonstrations in craft making and exhibitions of wonderful work on display beginning at 7pm.

Mount Henry Art Studio, Portarlington have a lovely Art and Relaxation event for adults beginning at 7.30pm. Limited places are available so to book contact 087 9063363.

In Mountrath Dr Arthur Broomfield will give a talk on the works of poet Elizabeth Bishop for students with a focus on works included in the Leaving Cert programme.

In Knock Hall, Spink from 8pm there is  an evening of traditional Irish music, song dance and storytelling in a rustic setting.  Contact: 086 2660768 for more information.
