Cloneyhurke NS and local community come together to promote Gaeilge

Partnership between Cloneyhurke National School & St. Brigid’s Community Centre Committee bringing Irish language to life

A meaningful partnership between Cloneyhurke National School and St. Brigid’s Community Centre Committee is helping to bring the Irish language to life across generations.

The collaboration, developed as part of the school’s Gaelbhratach initiative, is creating new opportunities for both pupils and community members to use and enjoy Gaeilge in a natural, social setting.

The project began when the Community Centre Committee approached the school seeking support in establishing a local Irish-speaking group. Teacher Natasha Delaney played a key role in getting the initiative off the ground, leading weekly lessons for the first 12 weeks to build confidence and enthusiasm among participants. Weekly lessons continue on Monday evenings at 7.30pm, followed by a cup of tea.

Following this initial phase, the partnership has evolved into a monthly gathering where local members of the community visit the school to engage in cómhrá with pupils. These sessions provide a relaxed and welcoming environment where language learning extends beyond the classroom, fostering both fluency and meaningful social connections.

The recent visit from the community Gaeilge group was a highlight for pupils and staff alike. Through games, conversation, and shared activities, students had the opportunity to practise their Irish in a real-life context, while also learning from the experience and wisdom of older generations.

This initiative not only supports the revival and everyday use of Gaeilge but also strengthens ties within the local community. It reflects a shared commitment to preserving Ireland’s linguistic heritage while making it accessible and enjoyable for young learners.

As part of ongoing Gaelbhratach Programme work, Cloneyhurke NS hopes to continue building on this partnership, ensuring that Gaeilge remains a vibrant and valued part of school and community life for years to come.
