Fundraiser

The last of John Bolton’s fundraising events prior to his trek to the Rocky Mountains in aid of Laois Hospice takes place in the Laois Shopping Centre in Portlaoise on Saturday May 20 where Mr Bolton will endure an eight hour static cycle on a stationary bicycle beginning at 10am.

 

Colaiste Iosagain

Annual 5k takes place around the streets of Portarlington on Friday May 19. Students are leaving the school grounds at 11.30am. Students would really appreciate all the support from the people of Portarlington

FRIENDS TOGETHER SOCIAL CLUB
Friends together continue meeting on Tuesday & Friday each week from 2.30pm to 5pm in the Scouts Den Main St. Free refreshments & also free transport for anyone who would like to attend. Lots of activities take place. Contact 087-2788472 for more information.

CREDIT UNION

Portarlington Credit Union would like to announce a change in opening hours. From June 6 there will be one change to our opening hours. We will open from 10 am every Tuesday. All other days will remain unchanged.

 Free Beginners Computer Class-We still have limited places available for our Computer Course for Beginners starting on Friday May 26. This is a free 5 week course taking place on Friday mornings 10am-12pm. To book your place call 057- 8643751 or give your name at the library desk.

Knitting Group-The knitting group meets every Friday morning at 10:30am. New members of all abilities always welcome.

Colouring for Calmness-Colouring session for adults , meets every Tuesday at 10am. Pictures provided just bring your own pencils/pens.

Classics Book Club
The next meeting of the Classics Book Club takes place on Wednesday May 31 at 11am.  They will be discussing At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O’Brien. Copies available at the library and new members are always welcome.

National Volunteering Week 2017

Laois Volunteer Information Service will be promoting this via a stand in Laois Shopping Centre on Wednesday May 17 from 11am – 4pm.  This will give potential volunteers an opportunity to come and find out more about volunteering and sign up for volunteering opportunities.  It is also a great point of contact for charities and community groups that want to register with Laois Volunteering Information Service or that need advice/support, particularly in the area of recruiting or managing volunteers.

Portarlington Tennis Club

New members welcome. Annual membership Child €60: Adult €110: Family €160.  Still a few places left in Tony’s Beginner Coaching classes.  Ring 087 1231135 if interested. All ages and levels catered for. Introduce your young child (4 to 6 years) to Tennis. €23 for 6 lessons on Tuesdays at 3.15pm.

River  Meeting

The Waters and Communities Office is hosting a public meeting to discuss the natural waters of Laois. If you are interested in water quality, angling, heritage, biodiversity, amenity use or issues affecting your local waterways then this is a chance to have your say. Heritage week

Event Registration is now open for National Heritage Week 2017.  Registration for the printed event guide will close on May 31. Heritage Week 2017 will take place from 19-27 August. This year features two very special days.  Wednesday August 23 is Wild Child Day and is dedicated to wild children everywhere. Groups are encouraged to organise special events for young people on this day.  Sunday August 27 is Water Heritage Day, water in all its forms from sea to rivers to lakes, is celebrated. SYMPATHY

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Martin Augustine (Gus) Hynes Cushina & late of Tynagh Co. Galway who passed away suddenly on Monday May 8. Gus will be sadly missed by his wife Maura, sons Fergus, Dermot & Kieran, daughters Valerie & Linda, brother Jimmy, sister Rose (Dunne), grandchildren, his extended family, neighbours & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Thursday May 11 in St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Gus rest in Peace.
