Portarlington Speakers: An Evening of Humour
The ability of humour to turn a speech into great entertainment was shown in abundance by Noreen Diver and Donal Cahill. Noreen’s riveting tale of eating in a restaurant in Vietnam was hilarious and Donal’s speech on what men could learn about women from Chick Flicks was equally amusing.
One of the features of the meetings is not just that members get the opportunity to practice public speaking and giving presentations in a friendly supportive environment but they also get good supportive advice on how to improve their speeches in the evaluations given. Mark Bastow gave a presentation on the most effective ways to give and how to receive evaluations.
Table topics was as ever great fun. It is when members and guests can give short impromptu speeches on a wide range of topics and was expertly conducted by Edel Quinn with a superb range of topics which included the picking a fancy dress costume, the first thing to do in government, whether popular sayings are true, and what “Come Dine With Me” menu members would choose if they were the hosts. Great topics. Great variety.
Now with the evenings drawing in is a great time to improve your career skills of public speaking and leadership by joining your local Toastmasters Club “Portarlington Speakers”. Why not come along to one of our meetings the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7.45pm at the Heritage Hotel Killenard. Next meeting on October 18. All are welcome. See us on FaceBook and MeetUp.
