1916 Commemorations
Apologies to the people of the town who had not heard that the event in Spa St for Peader Macken had been cancelled and who contacted Committee members about it. A family member travelled from England and the Committee were invited by the family to honour Peader with them at his resting place in Glasnevin. This was a very special time where his grave and that of his late parents George & Anne Macken who lived in Spa St were handed over to the National Graves Association.

Laois 1916 Commemoration
The planting of a Tree at Lea Cemetery to commemorate the men from the area who died in the 1798 Rebellion & to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising will now take place in mid September instead of August. More details in the coming weeks.

Fundraising for Tom
Tom ‘ Chubby’ Dempsey is 39 years old and lives in Portarlington, Co. Laois with his wife Rosemary 7 family. After an accident in work in 2005, he had a discectomy in 2007 and again in 2009 on his back at L4/L5/S1. Both procedures were unsuccessful. Chubby now has 6 degenerated discs in his lower back and is in chronic pain.
The consultant in Dublin basically sent him home a few months ago and told him he has to live with it, as nothing they can do so after months of research his wonderful wife Rosemarie found a place in Barcelona, Spain (Dr Gilete) that performs stem cell treatment for Chubby’s problem. This involves travelling to Barcelona and having stem cells removed from his pelvis which they then process for 21 days after which they travel back to Barcelona and the cells are injected into the discs. The idea behind this treatment is that the stem cells regenerate and restore the discs, nerves and muscles.

Tom ‘ Chubby’ Dempsey
The total cost of the treatment runs into the 10’s or thousands and his family needs your help in getting his chronic and disabling condition sorted once and for all.
There will be a number of fundraising events over the next few months and your support will be very much appreciated. On September 24 a benefit night will be held, more details to follow.
