Portarlington 1916 Commemoration Events

Sunday July 24 @ 3pm—The re-naming of Spa St. Bridge to the Peadar Macken Bridge. The son of George Macken and Anne Shanahan who lived in Spa Street, Portarlington, Peadar Macken was elected in 1912 to the Dublin Labour Party as an Alderman. He was also on the O’Donovan Rossa funeral committee and he took part in the Rising. He fought at Boland’s Mills and was shot dead on April 27 1916 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. Macken Street in Dublin is named after him. Family members related to Peader Macken will be invited to the event.

Sunday August 21 @ 3pm— In 1966 for the 50th Anniversary of the Rising a tree was planted  & now 50 years later it is proposed to plant another tree and to erect a Plaque at the site at the entrance to the old Lea Cemetery & opposite Lea Castle. There are a few of the people who were there 50 years ago still alive & it would be nice to bring them all together again. Invitations will also be sent to the families of those who are no longer with us who also attended.

Portarlington Speakers Solstice Meeting

Edel’s beautiful reading of Jill Finch’s poem I Stand Quietly: A Letter to My Daughter and to Everybody captured everyone. We all sat quietly, attentively, enthralled at the experience. If you haven’t read it you need to.

Gaynor’s speech “things that make me smile” had everyone smiling. A refreshing delightful entertaining speech with such descriptions of May when the Emo woods turn into a carpet of blue.
Joanne as topic master had everyone giving their views on where to holiday, Euro 2016, Brexit, the Solstice and more while Carmel’s cunning listener questions showed how well we listened. It was a fun night. A great end to our 2015/16 season.
