Deepest Sympathy to Michael & Gerald Dooley Portarlington & their families on the Death of their brother Kieran Dooley Emo who passed away on May 10. Kieran will be sadly missed by his sister Celine, brothers Michael & Gerald, his extended family & many friends. Requiem Mass took place on May 12 in St Paul’s Church Emo, with burial after in the adjoining Cemetery. May Kieran rest in Peace.

Catherine’s Requiem Mass took place on May 12 in the Church of the Assumption Rathangan, with burial after in St Patrick’s Cemetery. May Imelda rest in Peace.

Port Trail Walking Group

Walk takes place every Tuesday & Thursday nights. It’s a great way to chill out after a busy day. Meeting up at the Park Lane car park on Tuesday night at 7pm & Thursday night at 7.30pm. FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA

The fashion extravaganza in aid of Mountmellick Parish 10-year debt campaign is on Friday May 27 in the sports complex. The evening begins from 6pm with over 30 craft and business stands for you to browse while enjoying the cheese and wine reception. At 8pm the models will take to the catwalk, displaying fashion from No 1 Boutique, Breda’s Gift Shop, Bridal Hall Ballybrittas, Colgan Sports Portarlington, Eamonn Bracken Menswear Portarlington, Fashion Boutique and Shaw’s, something to suit everyone. Also featuring inspirational hairstyles from local salons.

A fantastic door prize of a load of turf (sponsored) could be yours on the night. There will also be an auction and raffle with donated prizes including another load of turf, a voucher from Flynn’s Menswear, a handcrafted Nativity set, coffee maker, crochet throw and cushion and a Newbridge candle holder. So doors open at 6pm, all welcome along, tickets €10 from local shops & participating businesses.

ST. BRIGID’S COMMUNITY ALERT

St. Brigid’s Community Alert Group are hosting an information evening in St. Brigid’s Hall Garryhinch on Thursday May 26 at 7.30pm. Representatives from An Garda Siochana, Portarlington Fire Brigade, Community Groups, Homecare Security, First Responders, Love Port, Meals on Wheels shall be in attendance to offer advice and help deal with issues that affect our daily lives in our local community. Information on the various help services that can be obtained through Offaly County Council will be available.

Island Hopping in the Aegean & More-Gaynor Deacy enthralled everyone as she island-hopped around the Aegean before getting a great job in London and then disappearing into a Kibbutz to find her real self. Mark Bastow finished his story telling series with a moving tale of denial and deceit.
There was much discussion about the stress school students are put under not just from exams but also from a regime that demands regular homework. After all most adults do not take their work home so why should students? Young people needed time to be themselves and it was questioned whether students should have to regularly do homework.


Noreen Diver showed herself as that great master of innovation in asking some very different questions for members to practise their impromptu speaking skills. We learnt that lime green is this year’s colour (please wear your shades), that Burnley not Blackburn is where Bono will be holidaying, and that the humble office stapler needs to be treated with respect. The next meeting of Portarlington Speakers your local Toastmaster Club is at 7.45pm on Tuesday June 7 at the Heritage Hotel Killenard. Why not come along and see for yourself? All are welcome.
