The Portarlington 1916 Commemoration Committee would like to announce the following dates for events we have been organizing to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Rising.
Sunday May 15th–
We have commissioned a sculpture of the ‘Starry Plough’ from the original flag which will be placed on the Kilnacourt roundabout. This sculpture will be created using a 100 yr old plough kindly donated to us by Jim Hyland. The unveiling will be done by Cathal McSwiney Brugha who is grandson of Cathal Brugha who took part in the rising and died himself in 1922.
There will be a parade then from the roundabout to the Peoples Park lead by piper Thomas Murphy, the school Bands & the Scouts, where a Memorial Stone will be unveiled beside 7 trees which have been planted in memory of the 7 signatories. Also a tree will be planted by Cathal McSwiney Brugha in memory of all the men, women & children who died at this time. This will be followed by music from local musicians Turas & Aidan Doyle.

An Evening of Great Variety-Eve Daly’s beautiful poetry reading started an eventful meeting chaired by a very jovial Noreen Diver. Poetry is a rare enough treat these days and Eve’s moving piece was followed by a very inspiration passage by Donal Cahill capturing the essence of self-development and advancement offered by Toastmasters. Carmel Moore brought everyone down to earth or at least to the water’s edge as she explained how she took the plunge, learnt to swim and overcame her fear of water.
Mark Bastow amused everyone as he took an unusual journey. Table topics provided plenty of laughs and unusual gems of information. Did you know that Blackburn that centre of clog dancing is the new select holiday destination for the likes of Bob Geldof? Well it is surprising what you learn at Toastmaster meetings like those of Portarlington Speakers. It is a fun but very effective way to boost your leadership and speaking skills. Next meeting May 17 at 7.45pm at the Heritage in Killenard. All are welcome.
Happy Hearts – Active Retirement AGM will take place on Thursday May 12 at 2pm in Portarlington Community Centre. All members welcome.
The Laois Branch of the Irish Kidney Association would like to thank everyone who supported our recent Church Gate and Donor Awareness week collections. Also a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers. The support we get in Laois is greatly appreciated.
