Centenary Events in Portarlington
The Portarlington 1916 Commemoration Committee would like to announce the following dates for events we have organized to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising. All members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Sunday May 15—-We have commissioned a sculpture of the ‘Starry Plough’ from the original flag which will be placed on the Kilnacourt roundabout at the bottom of Station Road. This sculpture was created using a 100 yr old plough kindly donated to us by Jim Hyland from Lea. The unveiling will be done by Cathal McSwiney Brugha, a grandson of Cathal Brugha who took part in the Rising and was shot in 1922. The unveiling will be followed by a Parade to the Peoples Park where 7 native Irish trees (white beam) have been planted, one for each of the seven signatories of the Proclamation along with an inscribed granite Memorial marking the tribute.

Laois 1916 Commemoration
A separate single tree will also be planted by Cathal McSwiney Brugha in memory of all the men, women & children who died in 1916. This will be followed by music from the local choir, local band TURAS and local singer Aidan Doyle who has written 2 songs around the events of the Rising.

Portarlington Speakers
There were great expectations as President Carmel Moore opened the meeting in the Club’s new venue The Heritage Hotel in Killenard and those expectations were met in the bucket load starting with Joanne Molloy’s beautiful recitation of the poem A Daisy. Noreen Diver’s impromptu speaking session had members driving around in Rolls Royce cars, acting as art critics, enjoying the childhood years and generally having some great fun. We then went down to earth with an excellent speech by Geraldine Kennedy on Growing Your Own Veg giving the many benefits and very practical advice on how to do it. Do you know how to intertwine your carrots? Well Portarlington Speakers do! Donal Cahill gave a very entertaining speech detailing the progress of the Club that had everyone killing themselves with laughter. If self-development is such fun why isn’t everyone doing it? Well they can at any of Portarlington Speakers meetings at The Heritage in Killenard at 7.45pm on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Next meetings May 3 & 17. All are welcome. In addition there will be a Portarlington Speakers information table in Portarlington Library on the evening of Wednesday April 27 and of course all are welcome at the Heritage Killenard at 7.45pm on Tuesday May 3.
