Centenary Events in Portarlington
The Portarlington 1916 Commemoration Committee would like to announce the following dates for events we have organized to celebrate the 100thAnniversary of the 1916 Rising. All members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Saturday April 23—- This is the weekend of the 100th Anniversary of the Rising & we will be unveiling the Proclamation etched in granite and mounted on a plinth outside Portarlington Library along with the raising of the Tricolor. The Proclamation will be read by local school children. This event will take place at 3.00 pm.
Sunday May 15—-We have commissioned a sculpture of the ‘Starry Plough’ from the original flag which will be placed on the Kilnacourt roundabout at the bottom of Station Road. This sculpture was created using a 100 yr old plough kindly donated to us by Jim Hyland from Lea. The unveiling will be done by Cathal McSwiney Brugha, a grandson of Cathal Brugha who took part in the Rising and was shot in 1922. The unveiling will be followed by a Parade to the Peoples Park where 7 native Irish trees (white beam) have been planted, one for each of the seven signatories of the Proclamation along with an inscribed granite Memorial marking the tribute. A separate single tree will also be planted by Cathal McSwiney Brugha in memory of all the men, women & children who died in 1916. This will be followed by music from the local choir, local band TURAS and local singer Aidan Doyle who has written 2 songs around the events of the Rising.
Event to take place in June (date to be confirmed)-The re-naming of Spa St. Bridge to the Peadar Macken Bridge. The son of George Macken and Anne Shanahan who lived in Spa Street, Portarlington, Peadar Macken was elected in 1912 to the Dublin Labour Party as an Alderman. He was also on the O’Donovan Rossa funeral committee and he took part in the Rising. He fought at Boland’s Mills and was shot dead on April 27 1916 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. Macken Street in Dublin is also named after him. Family members related to Peader Macken will be invited to the event.
Tree at Lea Graveyard—In 1966 during the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the 1916 Rising a number of people from the Lea/Killenard area planted a tree near Lea Cemetery opposite the site of Lea Castle. Some of these people who were children at the time are still around & will be organizing another meeting at the site to mount a plaque to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. This event will take place in June/July.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making these events happen and we encourage everyone to attend the opening of these events. Thanks also to Laois County Council who gave us a grant of €1,600 towards the cost of the events.

Footing on the Bog & How men avoid working in the garden-After a short but inspiring poem by Carmel Moore it was into fun impromptu speeches with a dynamic start as we learnt that travelling to France or England by ferry is the way to go with the kids, that men can always talk themselves out of doing the garden work, and that Enda and Micheál had finally said hello to each other in the corridor of Leinster House.
We then learnt that the Bog was the bane of Noreen Driver’s life as a child as she and her sisters worked furiously in the hot sun turning and footing the turf as they watched their friends go to the beach.
