Portarlington Speakers

Club President Carmel Moore was in humorous form as she toured present-day Port through the eyes of St Patrick. The St Paddy’s Day theme continued in the short impromptu speech section (table topics) with recommendations for author Maeve Binchy, for book Around Ireland with a Fridge, for films The Commitments and Brooklyn, and for a seven day tour including Westport, Glendalough, Rossborough House, Guinness Store House, Duck Tour, and Emo Court (the house is open every day from Good Friday to the end of September). Do you never have enough time for all the important things but manage to check your phone regularly, do the social media bit and of course watch Coronation Street? Then you are not alone as Joanne Molloy explained her expertise in putting things on the long finger. It was a fascinating talk with good recommendations that we can all do.

Club President Carmel Moore welcoming newest member Geraldine Kennedy

Geraldine Kennedy was in top form with her trip to a very special place in the community – your local library. Wow how libraries have changed into welcoming, child friendly places of learning, expertise, free classes, and of course access to books without the expense and searching. As it is free to join the library in Laois this year all the Speakers will be down to the newly renovated friendly and exciting Portarlington Library right away.

Geraldine Kennedy was awarded a ribbon for best table topics speaker, Noreen Diver received a special prize for her excellent mini speech in Irish, Carmel Moore was best dressed and highly commended for her freshly baked Paddy Cakes and Donal Cahill for his many amusing answers and for chairing such an enjoyable meeting.

The next meeting at 7.45pm on Tuesday April 5 at the Killenard Community Centre is an opportunity for anyone interested in joining the best and friendliest personal improvement club available to come along and see for themselves. All welcome. see FaceBook, MeetUp,  email:port.speakers@gmail.com or visit      www.portarlington.toastmastersclubs.org/

This jewel of eighteenth century architecture designed by the great James Gandon is an ideal place to bring your visitors, your friends, and most of all yourselves.
