Portarlington Centenary Celebrations

The Portarlington 1916 Commemoration Committee is delighted to announce the following events to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising. The renaming of Spa St Bridge to the Peadar Macken Bridge. The son of George Macken and Anne Shanahan who lived in Spa Street Portarlington, Peadar Macken was elected in 1912 to the Dublin Labour Party as an Alderman. He was also on the O’Donovan Rossa funeral committee and he took part in the Rising. He fought at Bolands Mills and was shot dead on 27th April 1916 and is buried in St Brigid’s plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. Macken Street in Dublin is named after him. The Committee will also be unveiling the Proclamation etched in granite and mounted on a plinth outside Portarlington Library along with the raising of the Tricolor.

Laois 1916 Commemoration

Seven native Irish trees (white beam) will be planted in the People’s Park, one for each of the seven signatories of the Proclamation along with a boulder with an inscription marking the tribute. And finally we have commissioned a sculpture of the ‘Starry Plough’ from the original flag which will be placed on the Kilnacourt roundabout. This sculpture will be created using a 100 yr old plough kindly donated to us by Jim Hyland. Friends Together Portarlington

Chairperson Celine Knight & her committee would like to thank everyone who came & supported the launch of Friends Together Portarlington on Tuesday March 1. Your support was much appreciated. Also big thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. The club now takes place every Tuesday & Friday in the Community Centre from 2pm to 5pm on both days. Deepest Sympathy to Tony Whelan & family St Brigid’s Sq on the death of his Father Sean Whelan, Skirteen Monasterevin who passed away on March 8. Sean will be sadly missed by his loving wife Kitty, sons Tom, John, Tony, Paschal, Brian, Donal & Wayne, daughter Anne, sisters Maura, Joan & Marie, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his extended family, neighbours & friends. Requiem Mass took place in St Peter & Paul’s Church on Thursday March 10, with burial after in St Evin’s Cemetery. May Sean rest in Peace.

Girls Easter Soccer Camp

The FAI is hosting a 2 day girls only Soccer camp at Arlington AFC Lea Rd, ages 7-12 on March 22 & 23 from 10am-2pm. Cost €20 includes a soccer top. To book visit Girl’s soccer training on Tuesday’s 5-6pm (weather permitting). All girls aged 7-12 welcome.

Lip Sync Challenge

Portarlington Rugby Club are holding the Lip Sync Challenge on Friday April 1 at 8pm in the Heritage Hotel  Killenard. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets €15. Contact Adrian Hennessy, Breda Oakley, Mick Kirwan or Danielle Lawlor for tickets. This is going to be the event of the year, you won’t be disappointed. The acts are amazing and have been working so hard to ensure they put on the show of the century. Disco after the show.
