Portarlington Speakers
An Irish Lady’s Journeys & Tackling Fear: An Irish lady’s journey from rural Ireland through Russia in turmoil, the remoteness of Kazakhstan, banana farming in Australia, working in Angola, finding romance wind surfing in Mauritius, and finally joining the Birr business community was told as Geraldine Kennedy’s excellent icebreaker speech.

With 70% of the population admitting to a fear of public speaking Mark Bastow tackled the issue head-on. To control fear we need to understand it and Mark took us on a journey though the workings of various parts of the mind concentrating on our ancient survival mechanism the Hypothalamus. Practical suggestions on both how to avoid fear and to deal with fear were given. One of the tips of course was that in any field practice leads to competence and competence gives confidence. And where better to practice public speaking that at Portarlington Speakers where your audience will always be welcoming, sympathetic and supportive? Carmel Moore’s table topics were witty, topical and concluded with a very clever story telling technique which produced a very strange tale.
The Speakers next meeting is in the Killenard Community Centre from 7.45pm to 9.30pm on Tuesday February 2 and all are welcome. Want more information? Please see FaceBook, MeetUp, email: port.speakers@gmail.com or visit www.portarlington.toastmastersclubs.org/, or come along and see us.
