Portarlington TD for first time in almost a century!
The Portarlington-based former Army Ranger and Military Medical Officer gained 5,742 first preference votes in the South Kildare constituency. He went on to ultimately take a seat with a final tally of 10,940.

Portarlington has its own TD after a gap of almost 100 years!

BINGO

Our Senior Citizens bingo returned last Wednesday February 5 @ 8.30pm at the Portarlington Social Services, Link Rd. It will continue every Tuesday night until the end of June. Great to see all our regulars & hoping to see new people in the coming weeks. Lovely social night for all.

PORTS BOXING CHAMP

A big well done to the wonderful Portarlington 16-year-old Rachel Lawless who recently won the U18’s All-Ireland finals in the National Stadium in Dublin beating the current European Gold medalist. Rachel now qualifies for the Irish team who compete in Montenegro in April. You are a true inspiration Rachel. All your hard work and commitment has paid off. Rachel is daughter of Ray & Eimear Lawless.

CIVIC RECEPTION

Congratulations to champion swimmer Shane Ryan who was honoured at a Civic reception on Wednesday February 5 at the County Hall Portlaoise. This event was in recognition of Shane’s achievements in European & World championship swimming. Shanes proud mam Mary Beth travelled from the USA. All of Shane’s very proud extended family were also there to see this wonderful event. Well-deserved Shane. Portarlington will be watching you in your future achievements.

LAOIS ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

Laois Alzheimer’s Society Resource Centre at 47 Main Street Portlaoise is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. Our next Social Club is Thursday February 13 at 2.30-4.30pm in the Portlaoise Parish Centre, for people with Dementia and their carers. This is a very relaxed informal event where we can chat over a cup of tea. If you are in the area please join us. All welcome. Our next Support Group is on Wednesday February 19 at 7.30- 9pm in the Resource Centre, Portlaoise. The support groups provide an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation, to access information and practical advice in supportive environment. Free to family members affected by dementia and memory issues.

Laois Alzheimer’s are offering a week’s respite care to people who have a dementia diagnosis in Waterman’s Lodge Care Centre, Ballina/Killaloe, Co Tipperary. Their specialist overnight respite centre offers stimulation and activity to the person with dementia in a safe, friendly environment and respite from caring for the caregiver. SYMPATHY

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Angelique (Angie) Haw (nee Gleeson), Terryglass Nenagh who passed away on Tuesday January 28. Angie was predeceased by her parents Eamon & Jean & brother Edward. Angie will be sadly missed by her husband Paul, son Jake, her aunt, cousins, extended family & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Saturday February 1 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception Terryglass, with cremation after in Shannon Crematorium. May Angie rest in Peace.

PORT GAA NEWS

It’s that time of year again where we look for a big response with our main fundraiser of the year. The Laois Clubs Monster Draw with over €125,000 in prizemoney to be won with 4 monthly draws starting in March, and the last one in June. Tickets are €130, on sale from any committee member, and can be paid by in instalments of 4 x €32.50.
Bingo-Bingo continues every Tuesday night at 8.30pm in the Portarlington GAA Centre in McCann Park, with up to €4,000 in prizemoney to be won.
