Laois Offaly gathering of retired HSE staff takes place on Wednesday, August 29. Commences with Mass at St Fintan’s Hospital Chapel, Portlaoise, at 2pm followed by refreshments at the Portlaoise Parish Centre, Stradbally Road. PORTARLINGTON FREE FAMILY FUN DAY

 

Portarlington Lions Club are delighted to announce that their Free Family Fun Day takes place on August 12 in the People’s Park Portarlington from  2pm to  5pm with lots of attractions for every age group, including live music, free swimming session thanks to Portarlington Leisure Centre, Irish Dancing exhibitions, pet farm, pidgeon release, tug of war and last year’s winners welcome all challengers, bouncing castles, giant games, face painting, children’s athletics, football shoot-out, kiddies disco to name but a few.

A raffle will be held and first prize is the ever-popular trailer of groceries and second prize is a trailer of turf. This year we appeal for people’s support for the raffle as surplus funds will be donated to the family of a local little boy who is bravely fighting a serious illness.

We hope that you will join us on the 12 for a fun filled day for all the family.

 

TRACTOR RUN

A Tractor run will take place in Portarlington on Sunday August 26 at 11am. All proceeds will go to the Portarlington Community Development Association ongoing Projects. Dancing in Aid of Portarlington St Vincent de Paul continues every Monday night in the Gandon Inn Hotel & Restaurant.  August 6-dancing to John & Terry. Admission €8. Dancing 9.30pm to 12. A great night assured.

 

BINGO
Bingo continues every Tuesday night at 8.30pm in the Port GAA Centre. Prize money given out each week is over €2,300.

HERITAGE WEEK

Preparations are underway for Heritage Week 2018. More than 70 events are registered for Laois so it looks like this year’s will be the best yet! Heritage Week takes place nationally from August 18 to 26, and full details are at the Heritage Week website, www.heritageweek.ie. A guide is available in libraries and locally and there is more information on Laois County Council’s website.

Events include:  Lea Castle Conservation update August 23, 8-9pm in Portarlington Library also in Clanmalire House, Ballybrittas on August 24, 8-9pm; Family walk hosted by Irish Wildlife Trust Laois Offaly branch takes place in Garryhinch woods on August 19, 11am-1pm; Tour of Lanlord’s Georgian House at Mount St Anne’s, Killenard on August 23, 10am-4pm; Irish History Live August 23 in Portarlington Library 11am-12pm; Naturally Wild with Dale Treadwell on August 21, 10am-11am; Photography exhibition of Portarlington’s buildings hosted by Lea Castle Conservation Group August 25-26, 10am-6pm in the Parochial Hall, Market Square.

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Michael Healy, St Patrick’s Tce who passed away on July 23. Michael was predeceased by his wife Anne (Murphy) & he will be sadly missed by his son Michael, his extended family & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Thursday July 26 in St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Michael rest in Peace.

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Philip Horan, Bracklone St & formerly St Brigid’s Sq who passed away on Thursday July 26. Loving son of the late Paddy & Bridie Horan. Philip will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Ann, son Stefan, daughter Becky, brother Ger, sister Trish (Chambers), nieces, nephews, the Quinn family, his extended family & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Saturday July 28 in St Michael’s Church, with burial in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Philip rest in Peace.

Ellen (Ella) was predeceased by her husband Michael. She will be sadly missed by her son David & daughter Alison, sister Margaret, brothers John & Fr Tom, grandchildren, extended family & friends. Requiem Mass took place on July 28 in SS Peter & Paul’s Church Portlaoise, with burial after in SS Peter & Paul’s Cemetery. May Ella rest in Peace.

Pat was predeceased by his wife Joan (nee Powell), and he will be sadly missed by his daughter Siobhan, sons Padraig, Eoghan & Thomas, grandchildren, sisters, extended family, neighbours & friends. Requiem Mass took place on Friday July 27 at the Church of the Assumption Tullamore, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery Portarlington. May Pat rest in Peace.

 

GOOSEBERRY FAIR

The Cloneygowan Gooseberry Fair is taking place on Sunday August 19 . A fun-filled day out for all the family. All proceeds from this event go towards the Christmas party for our Senior Citizens. Parade from the Village green at 2pm. All very welcome.
